Church today was awesome, as usual! My pastor was talking about The Fruit of the Spirit. As he pointed out, most of us have heard sermons on this topic…. so he wanted to give something fresh, something new. And I believe that what he spoke about today can have major impact on wives as we strive to be wives after God’s own heart.

Let’s look at where fruit comes from. It doesn’t just “appear”… it grows and forms out of the sustenance of the vine or the tree that is rooted in nourishing soil. You can’t take a dead branch and expect fruit to appear; that branch has to be attached to a fruit-bearing vine!

John 15:1-5 describes Jesus as the vine. We are mere branches. Look at John 15:4-5

Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.

…for apart from Jesus, the vine, we can do nothing. We can bear no fruit.

Apart from Jesus… that means without our daily walk with Him, our daily devotions, meditating on God’s word throughout the day, we will shrivel up and die (spiritually). We will bear no fruit, and we can forget about being a good, Godly wife. All striving will be in vain, because we are not tapped into the life-sustaining nourishment of our Vine.

Can a branch bear its own fruit? Of course not! I can’t go cut off a branch of my neighbor’s peach tree and expect to have peaches of my own all summer long! Neither can WE produce the Fruit of the Spirit. (After all, it IS the Fruit of the Spirit, not the Fruit of Heather).

So, as a striving wife, we can TRY to be more loving, more patient, more gentle, more kind, and practice self-control…. but without abiding in Christ, and remaining in Him, we won’t really succeed.

Just like a branch receives its nutrients from the vine it is attached to, whatever flows out of CHRIST will flow into US, too! As long as we remain in Jesus, the Holy Spirit will produce His fruit in our lives.

Stay connected - don’t let Satan distract you from the MOST IMPORTANT part of being a Godly wife! Spend that time with Jesus, and everything else will fall into place…

I’d love to hear your thoughts……. leave a comment below!!

Keep on striving!

Heather
