As a wife, a mom, or a woman… what kinds of FEAR do you face?

As a wife, I face the fear of failure - that my husband won’t think I’m good enough, that I’ll fail at being the best wife out there.

I face the fear of rejection - that if I do something “wrong”, my husband won’t love me anymore.

I face the fears of burning dinner, leaving wet clothes to rot in the washing machine, forgetting to take the garbage out before it stinks up the whole house, and yes…. I face the fear of getting fat.  I suppose all of these seemingly “minor” fears stem from fear of rejection, now that I think about it.

Now, I find myself beginning to face NEW fears… as a soon-to-be Mom! That’s right…. Jason & I found out that I’m pregnant, and I’m due in November!  Exciting times, but scary nonetheless. :)

My first fears, being pregnant, have to do more with the pregnancy itself than being a mother.  What if I have a miscarriage? What if my morning sickness is so bad I can’t go to work? What if I get so fat I can’t lose the weight after the baby is born? What ifwhat ifwhat if….

A few weeks ago I began to think about the actual motherhood portion… which, of course, led to more “What if” questions! What if my baby has colic? What if I get post-partum depression? What if I’m not a good mom? What if I’m left alone with a newborn and I don’t know what to do with it?  What if my child is a fussy eater? And the list just keeps on going….

I know I’m not alone… most of this world faces fear… even Christians!  However, I know that regardless of my fears, God has an answer.  When I face Him with my “What if” scenarios, I can hear that still small voice saying to me,

Do not fear, for I am with you;
Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God
I will strengthen you, surely I will help you,
Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.
” (Isaiah 41:10, NASB)

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27, NIV)

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. ” (Philippians 4:6-7, NASB)

My husband was in an independent movie this past summer that just recently came out… and there’s a line in there that stuck with me. He said, “Eventually you’re going to have to choose between FEAR and FAITH.“  I believe we all have that choice… we can choose to succumb to our fears, live in a perpetual state of doubt & misgiving… or trust in God to carry you through, provide for you, and take care of you, just like He promises to.

Whenever you feel fear, doubt, or anxiety sneaking in… whenever the “What if” questions surface… meditate on these verses, & let the peace of God fill you, protect you, and comfort you!

Okay, now that I shared my fears… what are some of YOUR fears? And how have you overcome them? I’d love to hear from you!!

Keep on Striving,

Heather (& baby-to-be) :)

PS - My husband Jason & I run an online devotional called NOfearYEAR. If you are interested in working to overcome fear, I hope you will check it out! Each week has a devotional & a verse to meditate on, and once a month (every 2nd Monday) we have a LIVE devotional that you can watch right on our site as it’s being recorded. (It’s pretty cool!) ;) Hope to see you over there at NOfearYEAR.com!!

  1. Oh, Heather! I’m so excited for you. This was my first guess when you said you had news. Children are a gift of God. I know you and Jason will make wonderful guardians of this precious gift. I join you in this happy time! Blessings to you…

  2. Wow! Heather, I feel like you can add my name to the end of this post because you have hit the nail on the head for me! Thank you for being so open, honest and real. I could go on about this but perhaps we’ll have the opportunity to talk in person soon! :) I think what you and Jason are doing is great and much needed! In Him, Kristin :)

  3. I knew it! I knew it! I knew it! Once you said you and Jason had a BIG announcement, I just knew this had to be it! God bless the both of you as expectant parents. Congratulations!
Once again, I missed the live episode :-( but I hope to catch the taping of it once it’s posted on the site.
We really have to not let fear get in the way of God’s best for us!
I pray that God will bless you with a healthy pregnancy and labor.

    All the best!

  4. Congratulations on your news! A baby is a wonderful blessing and gift from God. “Blessed is the man who has a quiver full.” I will watch the CD once its posted. I had a wonderful Resurection Sunday! May the Lord comfort you in the what ifs of your journey to motherhood. Satan’s biggest trap has a tag on it that says “If”….Fear is a great topic for you to study. I have had plenty of experience in that category. Yes we know its the opposite of faith and its biggest problem is that fear has torment, but with the help of God we can be overcomers. Thank God that because of Jesus, our greatest fear, the fear of death and eternal separation from God has been nailed to the cross and swollowed up in victory!

  5. Heather! Congratulations and Praise God!!!! I am so, so happy for you! Enjoy being pregnant! It is awesome, even in the uncertainties and hormonal changes:)! Eric and I will be praying for you and Jason and your baby! Hallelujah!

  6. Oh Heather, I am so happy for you. Your site is an inspiration to me and today I woke up almost paralyzed with fear. My husband received a diagnosis this past Thursday of 3 masses in his colon from a cat-scan. We do not know yet if these are cancerous but the radiologist noted “highly concerning for cancer.” There are also 3 small lesions on his liver as well but of course, we simply do not know yet. We will be meeting with a surgeon this week or the first of next week. I am so afraid for him and scared for myself as well. I keep reading God’s Word and praying God’s Word but I still have times of extreme fear. Thank you for this being on my email this morning. It was what I needed to see. Please add my husband (Michael) to your prayers. Blessings to you and your family, Shirley Petroline, Tucson, AZ

  10. Hi Heather

Congratulations! I was 60 just last week and had my two gorgeous sons (24 and 22) with me as well as my husband and felt so blessed. I was remembering them when they were newborn and the joy and yes, anxiety too, that I felt as a new Mum but it is the most wonderful thing.

    God bless and protect you

    With love

  11. Hello Heather & Jason,

Thank you both for all you do to reach out and touch lives with the love of God. I met the two of you on my first flight ever! (to Orlando), and the two of you made that first time experience an unforgettable one. I believe it was a devine arrangement to have you two set with me. I felt like I was sitting with long time friends. I love both your websites and plan to stay connected. I will also be sharing them with my friends.

God bless you both in all you do. I rejoice with you over the anticipation of your baby’s birth.

    Be Blessed Beyond Measure!

    Helen Hopkins
