Today Jason and I led Edge, the pre-teen ministry at our church. It’s usually run by 3 amazing teenagers, but we like to give them a break once a month. Besides, these are the kids who will be in the youth group in a few years, so it’s nice to be building those relationships.
So our topic of the week was the Holy Spirit… pretty deep stuff for 5th graders. I was struggling preparing for it. Not because of the topic necessarily, but because I had to come up with the worship portion, and I just wasn’t sure what to do about it. I was trying to focus, but this week had been so busy and we had a little boy staying over our house last night, making things even more hectic….
We arrive slightly later than planned to church (making me feel rushed and distracted to start), set up… and I realize that one song I had downloaded for worship wasn’t working… it wasn’t playing. It was the ONE song I was set on using.
Finally I look at the clock, and realize that we’re missing the morning prayer time with the pastor and all the other people involved in various church ministries!
Worried about the worship, I debated whether to head in for prayer or not. Knowing that it’s probably the best thing I can do to fix my problem though, I went into the sanctuary, full of distractions, and joined the prayer circle.
Now, I consider this ironic that all of this was going on right before we’re about to talk about the HOLY SPIRIT… because what I was in dire need of this morning was a fresh filling of that Holy Spirit.
That 10 minutes this morning did the job… I felt such a peace walking out of that sanctuary and into Edge. The Holy Spirit did indeed empower me, fill me, and guide me through the service. (And the worship worked out fine, even without that particular song)
How necessary is the Holy Spirit!! How often do we try to do our daily routine - whether it’s teaching a Sunday School class, taking care of kids, going to a job, or fulfilling our wifely roles - without the power of the Holy Spirit? No wonder we feel like failures so often!!
The power of prayer, the power the Holy Spirit gives is so important!! I want to strive for that daily filling, my daily bread, FIRST in the day… before trying to tackle it on my own! I’d much rather be filled with His peace than my worry!
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
