Fear rears its ugly head in numerous ways in my life. Fear, in fact, can be prevalent in most people’s lives without them even being aware of it!  Let’s see if you can recognize any of these manifestations of fear in your life:

  • Insecurity
  • Pride
  • Stress
  • Panic attacks or anxiety
  • Timidity
  • Guilt
  • Extreme carefulness (like an OCD)
  • Worry
  • Superstition

These are all SYMPTOMS of fear!  Not sure what I mean?  Well, let’s look a few causes of fear.  Let’s say you have a fear of failure.  Couldn’t that cause you to become insecure? Prideful? Anxious? Timid? Extremely careful? Stressed out?  Perhaps you have a fear of rejection. Couldn’t that cause you to become insecure? Timid? Anxious? Worried? Guilt-ridden?

As a wife, both of those fears are real for me.  I fear failure.  I fear that my husband is going to see my failings as a wife and reject me.  Because of these fears, I have major issues with insecurity.  I recognized these issues early on in premarital counseling and have battled them ever since… but they are rooted in FEAR.

So, how do I get rid of fear? Well, for one… it can’t be by me WILLING myself to be a better wife… because I’m human, and I’ll never be perfect, so therefore I will always fall short.  Also, it can’t be by other people (including my husband) telling me that I’m a great wife, because in my insecurity I don’t believe them.

So… if it’s not in myself and it’s not in others…. where does my freedom from fear come from?  It comes from THE HOLY SPIRIT!!  It comes from the TRUTH of GOD’S WORD, not my own!

Let’s look at what God says about fear:

2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

No fear! (other translations say “timidity”) … but POWER (from the Holy Spirit), LOVE (God’s holy & righteous love), and a SOUND MIND (to not doubt God’s Word!).

John 14:26-27 says,  “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

The Holy Spirit is sent to remind us of God’s Holy Word.  Let’s be sure to be IN the Word, so we can receive all that God wants to say to us… one of which is, “Do NOT fear!”

God is working on me & my fears… I hope you will enable Him to do the same in you!  My husband and I started a Video Devotional called NOfearYEAR.com, and its purpose is to encourage and remind us to live lives without fear.

Will you take the challenge with me?  Leave a comment below, let me know if this is something that will be useful for you.  What is your biggest fear?

After you’ve left a comment, head on over to NOfearYEAR.com and check out the videos!

There are 6 Pre-Season videos that you should definitely watch - they cover a lot of what I just talked about.  Then, every Monday & Thursday (roughly) starting TONIGHT there should be a new devotional coming out!  If you’re reading this early enough, be sure to check out our LIVE first episode, tonight at 8:00 p.m. EST over at NOfearYEAR.com.

I look forward to making 2009 a NO fear YEAR with you!!

Keep on Striving,

Heather :)

  2. God bless you, Heather for this blog. Very recently I realized that I do struggle with bouts of fear in the forms of anxiety/panic attacks, doubt, stress and worry. Those things are from the ENEMY! I realize that it is God’s promise for me to “prosper and be in good health”. I plan on visiting your No Fear Year devotionals and I trust they will be a blessing to me and many others!
